Piston Fit Drawer Project Finished
Jim attended my piston fit drawer course at the UTC College in London recently. He wisely didn't rush at the end, choosing to take his time and finish it off at home to achieve a perfect piston fit.
The carcass is made from a stunning piece of Lacewood (quarter sawn London plane) with a walnut drawer front and African blackwood pull. The workmanship is excellent.

North of England Woodworking Show
Here's my set up on the Classic Hand Tools stand just before the show opened and here I am just before it closed, a few dovetails later!
It was a great show and was very enjoyable to catch up with friends old and new.

HNT Gordon Spoke Shaves and Shoulder Plane
A friend of mine is on a trip to Australia and paid a visit to Terry Gordon the owner of HNT Gordon who gave him a workshop tour, lucky man!
He came away with a 1/2" shoulder plane, a surprising useful little tool as well as a pair of wonderful spoke shaves in ringed gidgee. These shaves, with their high angle and tight mouth, are the best on the market and will handle figured woods and reversing grain with ease. They can only be bought direct from Terry in Australia but are well worth the wait.

Piston Fit Drawer Course at UTC College Finished.
I spent 3 days this week teaching a piston fit drawer course at the wonderful UTC College in London's old docklands.
The course was being run by Derek Jones (Low Fat Roubo) as part of a 2 week woodworking program including lectures a show and various other classes including a couple by the ever active Chris Schwarz.
This was the little project featuring 52 hand cut dovetails and 6 tapered through wedged tenons.
Andrew at work using a hefty Moxon vice. Andrew makes chairs professionally and you can see some of his lovely creations here https://goyderfurniture.wordpress.com/
Graeme cutting dovetails using my 1:5 magnetic dovetail guide.
Jim worked carefully and as you'd expect for an engineer his work was immaculate.
Clinton using calpiers for perfect dovetail spacing, wearing an Opti Visor which was invaluable to him for this fine work
Martin is a seasoned dovetailer and it showed with his speed and accuracy
Geoffrey, the college principal, did very well and was obviously proud of his progress.
Martin had the job done By lunchtime on the last day, no mean achievement!
A happy and relived bunch at the end of the course.

New F&C Magazine, ANGLED DOVETAIL BOX ARTICLE
With Derek Jones leaving the magazine the big bosses at GMC have decided to change it's direction and format. It has more pages, less advertising and higher price tag and will only be printed every 8 weeks. The matt finish gives it an up market feel and it's much more of a coffee table magazine.
Much of the content is beyond the scope of a home workshop to produce, but interesting none the less. It's sure to divide opinion but I suppose only time will tell if it's a good move.
My article is very nicely laid out but they have decided omit the exploded drawings giving all the dimensions, which is a shame for those who would like to have a go at making the project.

The next is this dovetailed box with a tilt top lid, I've done this course a number of times at West Dean College. It's another fairly challenging project and would suit those who have had some dovetailing experience. The interior has a leather base and a friction fit mitred lining, it's on the
