Wonderful Craftsmanship from Sweden.

Robin is a last year student at the famous Malmsten Woodworking School in Sweden. He sent me these pictures of a recent project exploring the use of 'invisible' wooden hinges.

Shawn from Maryland sent me pictures of his home made magnetic guides. He has done a fine job and I'm sure they work very well.

Beautiful Wood for the UTC Course

The carcass for the box needs to be as stable as possible for accurate fitting and minimum movement over time. Finding properly quarter sawn timber is not easy over a width of 250 mm (10"). Most of the kits will be made up from booked matched timber such as the olive ash above. But a couple of kits will be made from full width lacewood (London Plane) which is bang quarter sawn and quite stunning. I believe they call this sycamore in the US.
Note the blue masking tape on the book matched board is acting as clamps, when the edges are shot to a perfect fit stretched tape is all that's needed.

It has more than 50 dovetails and the course is suitable for those used to cutting them.

The process of building a cabinet with a minute taper front to back will be explained as well as the process for making and fitting a piston fit drawer. All materials are included in the price of the course.

Dovetailing Weekend

A very enjoyable weekend making dovetails. Chris, Julie, Roger and Michael were all new to dovetails and all did extremely well.

Chris brought this fine shooting board plane which he made. It has bocote sides, wenge centre and extra weight was added to both ends with brass weights. He used a Veritas blade and adjuster kit which worked very well.

Side table in Quarter Sawn Oak

Matt sent me these pictures of a very nice little side table he made in quarter sawn oak. The proportions are good and the tapered legs are very elegant.

It has nicely dovetailed drawers and it's nice to see the rear has received the same love and attention.
